The annual Claygate Five Mile run took place under blue skies but the going underfoot was difficult particularly where rainwater had remained on the churned up bridle paths. The winner for the second successive year was Tim Doran who beat Tim Grose into second place. Tim Grose has the astonishing record of having previously won the race seven times.

However, the feature of the event was the performance of Molly Refner in the Under 16 category, who not only was the first female home, but knocked over a minute off the previous best time set in 1996. Although entering in the Junior Girls category, under the rules she wins the Senior Ladies cup – the Harry Stone trophy. Jane Davies was, of course, winner of the Ladies Super Vets class; every year since 1992 she has come away with a winner’s cup.

The family section winners were in three cases the same as in 2007. The newcomers were Claire and James Wilson in the Mother/Son class.

A new feature this year was a section for members of the Claygate Royals football club with some 60 entries.

We would like to express our appreciation to Gascoigne Billinghurst for their sponsorship of the event. Also thanks to The Griffin for donating prizes in the family section.

The 2007 run took place in nearly perfect conditions for both the runners and the administration, something that had not been anticipated earlier in the week.  Most, but not quite all, the puddles in the footpaths comprising the course had dried out.

The first runner home was Tim Doran  (second in 2006) who narrowly beat last year’s winner Ian Johnson.  But Ian had the satisfaction of winning the veteran men’s cup and also creating a new record time for that class.

The organisers were flattered to have participating the olympic runner Sonia O’Sullivan and she was duly first the first lady to complete the course.  George James again won the Junior Boys class, coming in 6th overall in just under 30 minutes – not bad for 5 miles largely on rough footpaths with a few obstacles to avoid.

Familiar names featured in the winners of the family section in which a parent partners a son or daughter.  Alan and Julie Buddery won the Father/Daughter class for the fourth year and the Renfer and Savill families also prominently featured.

A listing of the winners in each of the various sections is given on this website as well as the full results showing every runners placing and time.
